Well to me its about struggle with addiction - alcoholism. He wants to give it up, but can’t and the poem emphasizes his struggle.

The first part of the poem deals with how an alcoholic sees the day…a long interval before they can start drinking again. The second part speaks of new beginnings after he decides to go on the wagon and find other things to occupy his time in a more healthy manner. The structure of the poem in the second half is awkward in the second to last line where the rhyme disappears completely (dark/feed and time/night). Hope this helps
